Overview
Look, the 1960s weren’t all peace signs and flower power, and Stoned 2005 makes that point loud and clear. It drops us right into the messy, drug-fueled descent of Brian Jones, the golden boy who essentially founded The Rolling Stones only to find himself pushed to the sidelines by his own creation. The mood is thick with incense, cigarette smoke, and a heavy sense of resentment. We spend most of our time at Cotchford Farm, Brianโs Sussex estate, a place that feels less like a rock star sanctuary and more like a gilded cage.
Itโs a humid, claustrophobic experience that jumps between the high-flying days of the band’s rise and the final, lonely weeks of Brian’s life in 1969. You get this sense of impending doom from the very first frame. Thereโs a strange, uneasy chemistry between Brian and Frank Thorogood, the builder hired to fix up the house who eventually becomes something of a reluctant keeper. And thatโs the heart of the film: the power struggle between a man who has everything but is losing his mind, and a man who has nothing but is losing his patience. If youโre expecting a celebratory concert flick, youโre in the wrong place. This is a story about what happens when the party ends but you’re still stuck in the room.
